How do we get the news in Uganda?

The news is important, wherever you are in the world, we all need to know what is going on around us! I went out and had some really good conversations with the people around me in Uganda. I spoke to some of the staff that work at the Kibaale Community Centre in the village where I live, and I also spoke to some students who are in the same grade as me at the school here.

Gerinah, a social worker at KCC, said some of the time she would get the news from friends and just from talking to people. Sometimes she will read the local newspaper, which is easy for her to do because it is offered in the library here, so all the students can also access it. She said the newspaper she reads would be all about Uganda and news for this country, not international news.

I also spoke to three students in grade 10, Mark, Miracle and Esther. These students said that they listen to the radio with their family at home, and they might hear news about Uganda, Africa or even world news. For local news, there is someone in town who broadcasts what's going on from the back of a truck with a loudspeaker. This news might be once a week to share about a special event for the community. These students also said they can go to the computer lab at school to do research and while on the computer might also see world news on the internet.

I interviewed Stella, she is an accountant and lives in the city, not a small village. She told me that she often watches the news on tv after work, she can watch local channels and international channels this way, so it’s a great way to hear local and world news. She is also on social media, so she can access news on her phone, Facebook, or from news sites. She mentioned that she also likes to read the newspaper when she first gets to work, to know more about local news. As well, since she is very outgoing and has a lot friends, she also gets a lot of local news from word of mouth!
